Apple's voice assistant, Siri, was once a pioneer in the chatbot race, giving the company a significant head start. But here's where it gets controversial: despite this early advantage, Apple has failed to keep up with the AI revolution, and its voice assistant has fallen behind.
Babak Hodjat, one of the brilliant minds behind Siri's technology, has some insightful thoughts on why Apple's AI journey took a different turn. He believes Apple's obsession with Siri's visual and auditory appeal overshadowed the user experience, a critical aspect often overlooked.
"They were too focused on how Siri looked and sounded," Hodjat shared in an interview with Business Insider. This narrow focus, he argues, led Apple to neglect the quality of user interactions, a crucial element in the success of any AI assistant.
And this is the part most people miss: the initial rollout of Siri as a voice-only assistant might have been a strategic mistake. Hodjat, now the Chief AI Officer at Cognizant, believes that offering multiple interaction modalities could have made Siri more accessible and comfortable for users.
"At Dejima, we understood that modality was secondary. Users should be able to choose how they interact, whether it's through voice or text," he explained.
The discomfort of talking to an inanimate object, like a phone, is a valid concern. Hodjat humorously points out that it's easier to talk to your car, perhaps because of its movement and eye-like headlights, than to your fridge.
Despite these challenges, voice assistants are expected to gain immense popularity, with an estimated 148.7 million users this year alone. Siri, although forecast to reach 87.3 million users in 2025, has struggled to keep up with the AI age.
Apple's attempts to upgrade Siri have been met with obstacles. Earlier this year, the company had to delay a planned overhaul, and now, it's reportedly nearing a deal with Google's Gemini model to handle some of Siri's features.
Hodjat believes a partnership with Google could be a smart move for Apple, but only if they commit to it. "They keep changing their minds," he noted, highlighting the need for a consistent strategy in the fast-paced world of AI.
