The ninth annual DREAM Series is set to kick off this week at Tempe Diablo Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. This premier development camp, a partnership between Major League Baseball (MLB) and USA Baseball, focuses on nurturing the next generation of elite high school athletes, with a special emphasis on diversity. From January 16-19, current and former professional players will be in attendance to mentor and develop the next wave of minority pitchers and catchers at the Los Angeles Angels' Spring Training site.
But what makes this year's event truly unique is the star-studded staff leading the charge. With a combined 170-plus seasons of experience at the major league level, the 18-member team includes 17-year MLB veteran and 1995 World Series champion Marquis Grissom, longtime coach and 2019 World Series winner Mike Harkey, and 20-year professional Darren Oliver. And this is the part most people miss... Several coaches have ties to USA Baseball, either as coaches or players, adding an extra layer of expertise and experience to the event.
The camp will feature a range of activities, from workouts and high-level instruction to off-field seminars and athletic-based testing through the Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP) Performance Assessment. Athletes will be evaluated across the board using metrics gathered from PDP testing and Rapsodo data collection. But here's where it gets controversial again... Some argue that this level of technology and data collection is unnecessary for young athletes, while others believe it's essential for identifying and developing top talent. So, what do you think?
