Unlocking Zambia's Economic Potential: Fastest Trade Route to Walvis Bay (2026)

Get ready, Zambia! A groundbreaking project is set to revolutionize trade and boost the economy: the Western Corridor Transformation Project. This initiative promises to be the fastest trade route to the Walvis Bay port, opening up incredible opportunities for growth.

This project, officially launched with a groundbreaking ceremony officiated by Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) led by Western Corridor Limited (WCL). WCL, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), is backed by BeefCo Limited and First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Limited. Construction is already underway since the ceremony held in Kasempa town.

The ceremony was attended by key government officials, including ministers, RDA officials, traditional leaders, and private sector partners, showcasing the widespread support for this ambitious project. This strategic, private sector-led initiative aligns with the government's Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP). It aims to unlock the economic potential of the Western Corridor through investments in integrated agriculture, infrastructure, and value addition.

WCL plans to upgrade the existing gravel road to a bituminous standard, including two new bridges over the Lalafuta and Luena rivers and urban road improvements in Kasempa and Kaoma Districts. This 371-kilometer road project will significantly reduce travel times, create jobs, and increase export potential. It will connect key mining zones, boost agricultural capacity, and provide the fastest trade route to the port at Walvis Bay in Namibia.

President Hichilema emphasized the project's alignment with government priorities, particularly in agriculture and mining. He highlighted the vast potential for regional connectivity and international trade, stating, "This road means business, business to move goods from Zambia to the world through the port of Walvis Bay, and from the world, through Walvis Bay, back to Zambia." He stressed that even during challenging economic times, the focus remains on helping the Zambian people through initiatives like the PPP to unlock investment.

He further expressed his satisfaction with the improved road infrastructure, which will directly address unemployment by creating jobs for the local community and youth. It will also support MSMEs by providing opportunities for local contractors and suppliers, with at least 20 percent of project works reserved for Zambian citizen contractors, service providers, and/ or suppliers.

Western Corridor Limited’s CEO, Buks Jansen Van Rensburg, highlighted the importance of teamwork in realizing the vision of the Mutanda to Kaoma road. He encouraged Zambian solutions for Zambian challenges. First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Limited Country Manager, Dr. Godwin Beene, emphasized that mining should act as a catalyst for inclusive and sustainable development.

Dr. Beene stated that a robust road network is essential for a thriving mining sector, connecting production centers to markets and communities to opportunities. FQM has invested in road infrastructure within Solwezi and Kalumbila over the past decade. The Mutanda–Kaoma Road builds upon that legacy, demonstrating how responsible private investment can complement public infrastructure priorities.

But here's where it gets controversial... This project relies heavily on a PPP model. Do you think this is the best approach for infrastructure development, or are there alternative funding models that could be more beneficial?

The groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of major development works, ushering in a new era of economic and social prosperity for the Western Corridor. This event highlights the government’s commitment to sustainable development, creating significant employment opportunities, and improving livelihoods throughout the province.
