New data reveals a shocking trend: over 1,500 drivers have been caught running red lights multiple times, with some drivers doing so up to five times! This statistic is concerning, as it indicates a lack of learning and respect for road safety.
But here's where it gets controversial: the current punishment system doesn't seem to be enough of a deterrent. When a driver fails to stop at a red light, they receive a TS10 endorsement on their license, a £100 fine, and three penalty points. However, road safety experts argue that these consequences aren't always effective in preventing repeat offences.
The statistics highlight the potential consequences of this reckless behavior. In 2023, 23 people lost their lives in crashes where a driver ignored traffic lights, and 1,658 people were injured in similar incidents. These numbers are a stark reminder of the dangers of running red lights.
Nicholas Lyes, from the road safety charity IAM RoadSmart, emphasized the importance of red-light cameras in enforcing the rules, especially when police officers are not present. But he also pointed out a common mistake: drivers speeding up at amber lights, which can be just as dangerous.
The Highway Code is clear: drivers should stop at amber lights unless it's unsafe to do so. And this is the part most people miss: the code also states that drivers must not move forward over the white line at a red light, only proceeding when it's safe or to turn right. When traffic lights are not working, drivers should approach the junction with caution.
The report also uncovered a worrying trend near schools. Over four years, 13 drivers were convicted of failing to stop for school crossing patrols. This offence is particularly serious due to the vulnerability of children in these areas.
