Get ready, snowdrop enthusiasts! The Garden House, home to one of the UK's most impressive snowdrop collections, is anticipating a 'truly exceptional' season. But what makes this year so special? Let's dive in!
According to the gardeners, a perfect blend of weather and the flourishing of a special collection is setting the stage for an unforgettable display. They're predicting the 'finest display' yet! The Garden House, located near Yelverton, boasts over 400 different snowdrop varieties. And here's where it gets interesting: in 2020, they became custodians of a portion of the Fieldgate Collection, belonging to the late plant hunter, Colin Mason.
Head gardener Nick Haworth explains that the hot, dry summer, followed by a mild autumn, has created ideal conditions, especially for Mason's snowdrops to thrive in the 10-acre (4ha) garden.
Colin Mason, a specialist snowdrop grower and breeder from Kenilworth, Warwickshire, was known for his global expeditions to discover new varieties. Mr. Haworth notes that these conditions have been perfect for Mason's snowdrops to multiply. "Visitors will see many of his quirky, characterful, and hard-won varieties at their absolute best," he adds.
The snowdrop festival kicked off on Friday and will continue until mid-March.
