Tess Daly, the beloved face of Strictly Come Dancing, has received the 'greatest honour' of her career: an MBE. This prestigious recognition, bestowed by the King, acknowledges her outstanding contributions to broadcasting. But what makes this honour so special, and how does it reflect on her remarkable career? Let's dive in.
Daly, visibly moved, dedicated the honour to her late father, envisioning his immense pride in her achievement. The investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle was a moment of profound significance, highlighting the culmination of her 25-year career in television. She expressed her gratitude, describing the experience as 'surreal' and 'inspiring,' surrounded by individuals who have made a tangible difference in their communities.
Her Majesty put her at ease. She shared a conversation with the King about the show, revealing that the Queen is a fan, and even sent her a congratulatory letter upon receiving the MBE. This personal touch underscores the significance of the honour.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Last month, Daly and her co-host Claudia Winkleman, also an MBE recipient, announced their departure from Strictly after the Christmas special. They've been a dynamic duo since 2014. Daly reflected on her upcoming exit, stating, 'There's no show like it.' She's looking forward to 'a lie-in on Saturday morning – and new ventures in the new year.'
When asked about her replacement, Daly admitted she had 'no idea.' However, she plans to watch the show with Winkleman, highlighting their enduring bond.
And this is the part most people miss...
Daly's journey began in 1999 when she hosted The Big Breakfast's 'Find Me A Model' competition on Channel 4. She's been the face of Strictly since its inception 21 years ago, initially alongside the late Sir Bruce Forsyth. Winkleman joined in 2014, after hosting the sister show It Takes Two since 2004. Daly and Winkleman made history as prime-time Saturday night TV's first female presenting duo, and they won an entertainment program gong at the Bafta TV Awards in 2024.
Beyond Strictly, Daly has also presented the annual charity appeal show BBC Children In Need, co-hosting with the late Sir Terry Wogan. This illustrates her commitment to charitable causes.
Also at the investiture was former EastEnders star Anita Dobson, who was made an OBE for services to charitable fundraising and philanthropy, Shadow housing secretary Sir James Cleverly, and Det Supt Katherine Goodwin, the Met Police chief who led the manhunt for the murderer of Sarah Everard in 2021, received the King's Police Medal.
