Hold on to your hats, tennis fans! Serena Williams has officially put the kibosh on those comeback rumors, and she did it with a fiery message that's making headlines. Her post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, was crystal clear: "Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy."
So, what sparked this frenzy? Well, it all started when the tennis icon re-registered with the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), the organization responsible for drug testing in the sport. This move, understandably, led to speculation of a surprise return to the court for the 23-time Grand Slam champion and four-time Olympic gold medalist.
But here's where it gets controversial... Serena hasn't played a competitive match since her third-round loss at the 2022 U.S. Open. This exit left her just one Grand Slam title shy of tying the all-time record of 24 held by Margaret Court in women's tennis and Novak Djokovic in the men's game.
Instead of announcing a traditional retirement, Serena declared she was "evolving away from tennis," embracing her new role as a venture capitalist investor. Her X bio even reflects this transition.
The rumors gained momentum when it was confirmed that she had filed the necessary paperwork to be subject to random drug testing, including designating a specific location and time for testers to find her.
Adrian Bassett, a spokesperson for the ITIA, clarified the situation, stating, "She has notified us that she wants to be reinstated into the testing pool... I do not know if this means she is coming back, or just giving herself the option. All I can say is she’s back in the pool and therefore subject to whereabouts."
And this is the part most people miss... The fact that Serena is back in the testing pool doesn't necessarily mean she's planning a comeback. It simply means she's keeping her options open.
