Saskatchewan's Premier Scott Moe is set to join Prime Minister Mark Carney on a budgeted trade initiative overseas, with plans to visit India later this week. Moe will travel to Mumbai and then to New Delhi alongside Carney, according to the premier’s office.
Carney’s team says their discussions in India will focus on expanding the bilateral trade relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This visit follows a challenging year for Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector, which was hit hard when India imposed a 30% tariff on Canadian yellow peas last year. In response, Moe and his team have urged Ottawa to start immediate negotiations with India to ease the strain on farmers and producers.
Earlier this year, Moe joined Carney on a separate trade mission to China, where representatives from both sides reached an agreement: Beijing would consider reducing tariffs on Canadian canola products if Ottawa would lower duties on Chinese electric vehicles. That collaboration underscores the broader strategy of using diplomacy and trade incentives to smooth out global market tensions and support Saskatchewan’s agricultural export economy.
