A rare and precious arrival at Dartmoor Zoo has brought a glimmer of hope for the conservation of one of the world's most endangered big cats. The birth of an Amur leopard cub, a species native to the forests of northeastern China and southeastern Russia, is a significant milestone in global conservation efforts.
But here's where it gets controversial: some may question the role of zoos in conservation. While others might argue that zoos are essential for the survival of critically endangered species like the Amur leopard.
The cub, born on September 29, 2025, to parents Freddo and Lena, is a symbol of success for the international breeding program. With only 15 Amur leopards born globally this year, according to the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), this birth is a crucial addition to the species' population.
Lena, who arrived from Colchester Zoo in 2024, quickly bonded with Freddo after a successful introduction. Keepers monitored the birth through CCTV, and both mother and cub are reported to be in excellent health.
And this is the part most people miss: the early stages of a cub's life are critical for its development. Just over five weeks after its birth, the cub has begun to explore its surroundings, a sign of its healthy progress.
Dartmoor Zoo's Chief Executive, David Gibson, emphasized the significance of this birth, stating, "It's incredibly rewarding to know that we are making a substantial contribution to the survival of the most endangered big cat in the world."
Amur leopards are classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with fewer than 400 individuals left globally and only around 120 remaining in the wild. Improved protection in recent years has aided their slow recovery, but births like this are vital for the species' long-term survival.
Conservation groups, such as the WildCats Conservation Alliance, highlight the importance of accredited zoo breeding programs. These programs act as a genetically diverse reservoir for future reintroductions into the wild, and zoos also contribute significantly to conservation funding, investing over $350 million annually.
Animal Manager Madeleine Millin praised Lena's maternal instincts, saying, "Lena has been an exemplary first-time mother, very attentive and protective. The cub is active and playful, exploring its surroundings with curiosity. The entire team is overjoyed."
Katharina Herrmann, Wildlife Conservation Coordinator at Berlin Zoo and overseer of the European breeding program for Amur leopards, emphasized the significance of each birth, stating, "With such a small wild population, each cub represents a critical step towards securing the future of one of the rarest cats on Earth."
For now, the leopard enclosure will remain closed to visitors as the cub continues to develop and bond with its mother. Public viewing is expected to be announced in the coming months.
