Merlin's New CEO: Charlie Lexton's Journey and Vision (2025)

A bold new era for Merlin: Charlie Lexton takes the reins as CEO!

In a move that's sure to shake up the music industry, Merlin has appointed Charlie Lexton as its new CEO, effective January 1, 2026. But here's where it gets controversial... Lexton has been with Merlin since its very beginning, working alongside founding CEO Charles Caldas.

Most recently, Lexton served as Merlin's COO, a role he took on in April 2020. With this promotion, he steps into the shoes of Jeremy Sirota, the outgoing CEO.

As a true Merlin veteran, Lexton has been an integral part of the organization's journey, witnessing and contributing to key milestones. From negotiating deals with digital service providers (DSPs) and social media platforms to partnering with innovative companies like ElevenLabs, Lexton has been at the forefront of Merlin's success.

But it's not just about the deals; Lexton has played a crucial role in shaping Merlin's legal and business landscape. He was instrumental in resolving peer-to-peer copyright infringement litigation with LimeWire, facilitating the transfer of Parlophone Label Group to the independent sector, and orchestrating the sale of Merlin's equity interest in Spotify, which resulted in a massive payout of over $125 million for its members.

Lexton's journey in the music industry is nothing short of impressive. Starting as a DJ, writer, and producer, he co-founded London's Dorado Records. After qualifying as a lawyer, he worked at UMG and EMI, leading business affairs for EMEA ex-UK. Just before joining Merlin, Lexton co-owned and ran another independent label, City Rockers.

The trust and respect Lexton has earned within Merlin are undeniable. Darius Van Arman, Merlin's chairperson and co-CEO of Secretly Group, praised Lexton's consistent delivery of immense value throughout Merlin's history.

"When we searched for a new CEO, Charlie stood out. His track record speaks for itself. I have full confidence that under his leadership, Merlin will soar to new heights and continue to empower the independence of the world's leading music companies," Van Arman said.

Marie Clausen, a member of Merlin's management board and MD North America for Ninja Tune, echoed these sentiments. "Charlie is a strategic mastermind and a remarkable negotiator. The industry is at a crossroads, and with Charlie at the helm, Merlin is poised to turn challenges into opportunities. I have no doubt that under his leadership, Merlin will thrive."

Even the outgoing CEO, Jeremy Sirota, sang Lexton's praises. "Charlie has been an invaluable partner in shaping Merlin's evolution. His commitment to the team and his pioneering spirit, especially in the realm of AI, have been instrumental. I'm excited to see what the future holds for Merlin under Charlie's leadership."

And this is the part most people miss... Lexton's appointment comes at a time when Merlin is riding high. The organization recently announced its 2024 accounts, boasting record-high revenue of $1.64 billion and an administration fee at an all-time low of 1%.

In his own words, Lexton expressed his delight at the opportunity to lead Merlin. "My focus is on our members, the backbone of independent music companies worldwide, and on our incredible team. I am nothing without their support. And without our members, there is no Merlin."

So, what do you think? Is Lexton the right choice to lead Merlin into the future? The music industry is buzzing with this news, and we want to hear your thoughts!
