That's exactly what happened Sunday night as Lane Hutson etched his name into Montreal Canadiens' lore, delivering a heart-stopping overtime goal that condemned the Dallas Stars to their fifth consecutive loss. With just 1:20 left on the overtime clock, Hutson, already credited with an assist earlier in the game, seized the moment. After a crucial face-off win in the offensive zone, he confidently skated down from the blue line and unleashed a precise wrist shot from the right circle that found the back of the net. It was a moment of pure hockey magic, showcasing his skill and composure under immense pressure.
Montreal's coach, Martin St. Louis, emphasized the team's focus on internal standards rather than simply comparing themselves to other teams. "I feel you’re always trying to play to your standards," St. Louis said. "You’ve got to be careful in comparing yourself to all the other teams, but when you get an opportunity like this, you want to see how you stack up. We feel we have the brand right now and a group that can compete with anybody." Veteran Brendan Gallagher and Oliver Kapanen also found the back of the net for the Canadiens, who improved their record to 23-13-6. This win marked their fourth in the last six games (4-1-1), a welcome turnaround after a 2-0 shutout loss to the St. Louis Blues the previous night. Goaltender Sam Montembeault was solid between the pipes, making 24 saves, including a crucial breakaway stop on Dallas forward Wyatt Johnston just moments before Hutson's game-winner.
Montembeault himself described the save: “He came out of nowhere,” Montembeault said. “I didn’t think there was a player for them coming with that much speed. I was able to get my gap quick, and I read the shot well. It was a good save for us. After that, we won a great face-off on the other end and [Hutson] got a big goal for us.” The save was undeniably a turning point, shifting the momentum in Montreal's favor.
On the Dallas side, Wyatt Johnston had a standout performance with two goals, and Mavrik Bourque also scored. However, their efforts weren't enough to prevent the Stars from falling to 25-9-8 and extending their losing streak to five games (0-2-3). Goalie Jake Oettinger did his best, stopping 25 shots, but ultimately couldn't contain the Canadiens' offensive push.
Johnston acknowledged the challenges of scoring in the NHL: “I think we had a lot of good looks in the third, and even some good looks to get the lead,” Johnston said. “Every goalie in the League is a great goalie, so it’s not easy to score on anyone. It’s not easy to get chances against any teams, so you just have to keep pushing and doing those things that make us successful. There’s no real secret recipe, really, it’s just doing everything the right way and getting those looks.”
Gallagher opened the scoring for Montreal in the first period, deflecting a shot by Alexandre Carrier. Bourque answered for Dallas, tying the game with a wraparound goal. Johnston then gave Dallas the lead in the second period, only to see Kapanen equalize for Montreal. Slafkovsky put the Canadiens back in front with a power-play goal, but Johnston struck again to tie the game and force overtime.
Stars coach Glen Gulutzan lamented the penalties his team took in the second period, which disrupted their momentum and gave Montreal scoring opportunities. "Probably the biggest thing for me is that second period," Gulutzan said. "You take four penalties. First of all, you lose a lot of guys momentum-wise when you take four [penalties], and then you give them an opportunity. Obviously, they go up 3-2, and then it's a battle back, right in the third. So, we do have to clean that up.”

Adding to the significance of Hutson's goal, he became the third-youngest defenseman in Canadiens history to score an overtime goal, joining an elite group that includes P.K. Subban and Kaiden Guhle. Phillip Danault also had a memorable night, recording two assists to surpass 400 career points, marking his first points since returning to Montreal. The Canadiens' resilience was also on display, as this victory marked their 13th comeback win of the season, a testament to their never-give-up attitude.
