Judson ISD Superintendent on Leave: What Happened at the Marathon Meeting? (2026)

The future of Judson ISD Superintendent Milton “Rob” Fields III hangs in the balance after a dramatic school board meeting, leaving many wondering what comes next.

Following a marathon session, the Judson Independent School District (ISD) board made a series of perplexing moves regarding Superintendent Fields. Initially, they voted to remove him from his position, only to retract that decision later. The meeting, which included a lengthy closed session, has left the community with more questions than answers.

After over three hours behind closed doors, the board reversed its initial vote to relieve Fields of his duties. However, the situation took a turn when the board then voted to hire legal counsel, proceeding “as discussed in closed session.”

Adding to the confusion, the board has remained tight-lipped about the details discussed during the closed session, leaving the public in the dark. In a statement released to KSAT 12, Board President Monica Ryan announced that Fields had been placed on administrative leave with pay.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Assistant Superintendent of Technology Lacey Gosch will take on the role of acting superintendent until further notice. Trustee José A. Macias Jr. cast the sole dissenting vote against the decision to proceed “as discussed in closed session.” In a Facebook post, Macias asserted that “Dr. Fields is still our Superintendent, and for now, that is what matters the most.” He also characterized the situation as “100% political.”

Macias further expressed his concerns, stating that the board was reconvening to discuss the Superintendent's employment instead of addressing pressing academic and budgetary challenges. He highlighted that the agenda had been posted to “discuss the Superintendent’s employment,” potentially leading to the termination of his contract.

And this is the part most people miss...

This isn't the first time Fields' employment has been on the agenda. KSAT's review of previous meeting agendas reveals that the board has addressed the topic at least three times in the past year. The agenda item on the Jan. 10 meeting was phrased similarly to agenda items referencing the superintendent for meetings on June 27 and Dec. 9, 2025. No action was taken following the June 27 or Dec. 9 meetings regarding Fields’ employment.

Macias emphasized that these “attacks on the Superintendent and Administration create a toxic and divisive environment in the district and pull us away from working towards keeping our district moving forward.” He concluded that the situation is “100% political” and a “sad time for Judson ISD.”

Fields' tenure has coincided with discussions about potential school closures, program closures, and staff cuts, all amid a budget deficit. Trustee Laura Stanford expressed her concerns about the meeting, which she said was scheduled with “very, very little notice.” She also worries that losing the superintendent could negatively impact STAAR test results, stating that “When you create destabilization, when you create unrest, it doesn’t just affect the adults. It filters down to the kids.”

When asked if the board planned to terminate Fields, Trustee Monica Ryan stated that she could not discuss ongoing personnel matters.

Fields was appointed superintendent on May 11, 2023, and his contract was extended to June 2028 during a regular board meeting on Oct. 17, 2024. A native of Live Oak and a graduate of Judson High School, Fields retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2001 after 20 years of service. Before becoming superintendent, he served as assistant principal at Stevens High School and principal of Wagner High School.

What do you think about the situation? Do you believe the board's actions are politically motivated, or are there other factors at play? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
