Prolific scorer Emily Arel is embracing a new chapter in her basketball career at Post University. Once a high-scoring phenomenon at Gilbert School, where she led the Yellowjackets to the 2025 Berkshire League title, Arel is now transitioning to a different role. She's ready to adapt and thrive in a new position, one that requires a shift in mindset and approach.
Arel, known for her relentless energy and lethal scoring ability, scored an impressive 2,405 points, making her the Berkshire League's all-time leading scorer and the fourth-highest scorer in Connecticut high school girls' basketball history. Her talent was undeniable, and she was the director and maestro of the team's success.
However, at Post University, Arel's role is evolving. She's moving away from being the primary scorer and is embracing a more versatile player's role. This change is both exciting and challenging for Arel, who is eager to explore new aspects of the game.
"I know I'm not at the top of the scoring food chain anymore," Arel says. "I want to stay healthy and be whatever type of player the team needs. Whether it's being a lockdown defensive player or distributing the ball to my teammates, I don't think as much about being a scorer like in high school."
This shift in focus is a natural progression for Arel, who has experience in AAU basketball, where a similar role was more common. She's excited to play the style of basketball she enjoys, which involves distributing the ball and playing defense.
Arel's dedication to her craft is evident in her summer workouts. She lifted weights 3-5 days a week at the Gilbert gym and followed a structured plan provided by Post University. Her routine included 500 shots a day, ensuring she maintained her scoring prowess.
Post University head coach Courtney Burns offered valuable advice to Arel. Burns emphasized the importance of gaining the trust of teammates, ensuring that passing the ball results in positive outcomes. This trust is easier to establish in college, where all five players are expected to contribute.
Burns also highlighted the need for Arel to control turnovers. She advised Arel to focus on making smart passes, even if they aren't always the most glamorous plays. This has been a key area of improvement for Arel.
As Arel embarks on this new chapter, she acknowledges the mental adjustment required. She understands that the days will be longer, and the play will be more physically demanding. Despite the challenges, she embraces the opportunity to thrive in a new role.
"The most difficult adjustment is mental," Arel says. "But I know it's going to be different, and I'm ready for the challenge."
