Ethiopian Airlines has announced a significant development in its international flight network, with plans to launch direct flights to Australia by 2028. This news has been a long-awaited revelation for travelers, ending years of uncertainty and speculation. However, the airline's CEO, Mesfin Tasew, has emphasized that several crucial details still need to be finalized. During a press briefing in Addis Ababa, Tasew revealed that the launch of these flights is contingent on securing suitable long-range aircraft, specifically the Airbus A350 or Boeing 787-9 models. He stated, 'We need to secure at least two large aircraft to operate to the continent, and it will take at least two years to receive them from the manufacturers.'
Ethiopian Airlines already operates a fleet of these jets, which serve over 145 international destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. The airline has orders for more, including nine additional Boeing 787-9s and six Airbus A350-900s, all capable of direct flights to Perth, Sydney, or Melbourne. Tasew hinted at the potential launch of these flights in 2028, mentioning that two Australian cities have been shortlisted for this expansion. However, he declined to disclose their names, leaving room for speculation.
Last year, the airline's Regional Manager in Singapore, Telila Deressa Gutema, confirmed discussions with Sydney and Melbourne airports, stating, 'We are driving forward our strategic goal of expanding our services to Australia.' Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's largest airline and a member of the Star Alliance, has also confirmed plans to add doored business class suites to its newer Airbus and Boeing orders. The Airbus A350s will feature the Collins Aerospace Elevation seat, while the Dreamliners will be equipped with Elevate Aircraft Seating's Ascent model. This development promises to enhance the comfort and experience of travelers on these new routes.
