A Heavyweight Shockwave: Dillian Whyte Breaks Silence on Moses Itauma KO and Sparks Retirement Debate
Five months after a stunning first-round knockout loss to rising star Moses Itauma, veteran heavyweight Dillian Whyte is finally opening up about the fight that left the boxing world buzzing. Many had pegged Itauma as the heir apparent to the heavyweight throne, and his string of devastating early stoppages – ten in a row, all within two rounds – seemed to confirm that prediction. Whyte, a two-time world title challenger, became Itauma's latest victim in Riyadh, lasting less than two minutes against his fellow Brit.
But here's where it gets controversial... In a recent interview with iFL TV, Whyte surprisingly admitted that Itauma wasn't quite the lightning-fast, explosive fighter he'd anticipated.
"He's quick, don't get me wrong," Whyte conceded, "but he wasn't as fast or as explosive as I thought he'd be." Whyte attributed his defeat partly to last-minute adjustments in his training camp, acknowledging he strayed from his original game plan. "I got caught," he admitted candidly.
This revelation raises intriguing questions about Itauma's true potential. While his knockout streak is undeniable, could Whyte's assessment hint at vulnerabilities in the young contender's game?
And this is the part most people miss... Despite the setback, Whyte, at 37, isn't ready to hang up his gloves just yet. The Brixton-born 'Body Snatcher' has his sights set on facing the likes of Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr. before calling it a career.
"There are a couple of guys from my generation I haven't fought yet," Whyte stated. "Wilder, Ruiz – I'd love to test myself against them. Then I can say I've fought everyone from my era."
While Whyte's next fight remains unconfirmed, Itauma steps back into the ring in three weeks, headlining a card at Manchester's Co-op Live Arena against Jermaine Franklin Jr. This will be Itauma's second consecutive main event, further solidifying his rising star status.
*Is Whyte underestimating Itauma, or has he identified a chink in the young champion's armor? Will Whyte's planned fights against Wilder and Ruiz materialize, or is retirement looming closer than he thinks? * Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
