Catnip lotion, a natural repellent derived from the mint family plant Nepeta cataria, has emerged as a promising alternative to DEET-based mosquito repellents, particularly in malaria-prone regions. This discovery, presented at the Society for Experimental Biology's annual conference in Florence, Italy, on July 7, 2026, offers a cost-effective and locally produced solution to combat mosquito bites, a major global health concern. The study, conducted in eastern Uganda, found that a 6% catnip oil lotion performed as effectively as a 15% DEET-based commercial repellent, while a 2% catnip oil formula provided nearly the same level of protection. This breakthrough is significant as it addresses the growing issue of insecticide resistance and the high cost of commercial mosquito repellents, which often remain out of reach for many rural families in Uganda.
