The Bunyole Cultural Institution, a revered cultural body, has launched an ambitious project to bring the Bible to its people in a unique and inclusive way. In a heartfelt appeal, the institution's Prime Minister, Apollo Lydda, has called upon the Bible Society of Uganda and the public to support the creation of an audio Bible in the Bunyole language. This initiative is a significant step towards ensuring that all believers, including those with visual impairments or literacy challenges, can fully engage with the scriptures in their native tongue.
The launch of the translated Old Testament books, held at Butaleja Boma Grounds, was a vibrant affair, attracting a diverse crowd of Christians, clergy, and cultural leaders from the Bukedi region. Lydda's address highlighted the importance of making the Bible accessible to all, emphasizing the spiritual needs of the community. He pointed out that many believers are spiritually 'thirsty' but face language barriers, often leaving church services without understanding the preached messages.
The appeal extends beyond the Bible Society, urging men and youth to take an active role in church activities. Lydda noted the disparity in church attendance between men and women, attributing it to language discomfort with English. He challenged the men to embrace the newly translated local Bible versions, which eliminate language barriers, and encouraged increased participation in worship.
The Vice Chairperson of the Council of Bishops in Bukedi region, Bishop Girado Olukol, welcomed the translation project as a constitutional right realization. He expressed excitement about the audio Bible, emphasizing its potential to make God's word more accessible and relatable, thus deepening faith among believers. Olukol also appealed to the government to exempt taxes on Bible importation, citing the challenge of providing free or affordable Bibles to congregations.
The Bible Society of Uganda's CEO, Peter Serumaga, praised the language board translation committee's dedication. He encouraged churches to promote the translated books, addressing the challenge of maintaining interest post-publication. Serumaga reaffirmed the Society's mission to make God's Word accessible to every Ugandan in a language and format they understand, emphasizing the Bible's transformative power.
The Bunyole Cultural Institution has pledged continued collaboration with the Bible Society and other stakeholders to promote the translation and distribution of scripture in the Bunyole language, including plans for an audio Bible to reach the most remote and marginalized believers.
